When I returned to painting, my initial subjects became the birds that I encounter on the streets of the San Francisco Bay area. Sometimes these birds are very much alive and flying beside me as I pedal on my bicycle. Other times, they are victims of a traffic laden urban environment. Either way, feathered creatures are endlessly fascinating to me, a source of inspiration, joy and contemplation.
For most, a bicycle might sound like an odd tool for art making. However, it has become a fundamental component of my artistic practice. When I bought my current bicycle four years ago, I had no idea how much it would broaden my vision, peak my curiosity and fuel the thousands of photographs I have taken while riding it. Some of those photos have found their way into my recent paintings as well. Yesterday, I spent a beautiful afternoon pedaling and taking pictures. Almost everyday I come to the studio, I pedal here. I am grateful for my bicycle and for limbs that work.
Welcome to my new website. A little over a year ago I started renting a studio in Oakland CA, and have been having a wonderful time making art there. Although photography has been my medium of choice for many years, I have a renewed appreciation for painting and picking up a brush again has offered me great satisfaction.
Currently I am gathering together my portfolio for this website and will also post updates here about my creative practice. Please check back soon to see what I am up to. |
